WHERE ARE THEY NOW - Sam McPheeters/Born Against

Photobucket
Sam with Born Against, Photo courtesy of: Sam McPheeters

Between these two photos: I went broke and moved to Richmond, Virginia in '93...the city hauled off the Born Against van for unpaid parking tickets...lived in an office building for a while...clocked tens of dollars as the lead singer of Men's Recovery Project...worked at a Gloria Jean's Coffee for three bad days...later worked at a health food place, and then another health food place, and then a commercial painting company...lived in Rhode Island...owned a 1993 Nissan Pulsar...moved to California and got married...crashed my record company into an oak tree...worked at Borders for three weeks...made nearly $80 as the lead singer of Wrangler Brutes...worked at another commercial painting place...got high cholesterol....got rejected for a paying job at OC Weekly...twice...voted for Obama...just reprinted my old zine, Dear Jesus....

Since Sam wont plug himself I'll do it for him (no homo). He writes one of my favorite blogs on the internet

http://loomofruin.blogspot.com/

Also, I know he does a lot of freelance writing for Vice Magazine, and other publications.

Both Men's Recovery Project and Wrangler Brutes were seriously underrated bands that ended far before their time (especially Wrangler Brutes)

...And the internet is still a toilet stall.

I love Sam's remark that is clearly a stab at Jason/Life's Blood earlier "where are they now". On point as per usual Mr. McPheeters.

it is a shame that such a dynamic, influential, always suprising force in 1990's nj music did not strike it rich...but he would have probably said f-that anyway. thanks for putting sam's feature on your blog, tim mouthpiece. you guys were sorta polar opposite ends of the spectrum when it came to music and expression, but were forever linked as both being part of one of the more influential periods in music.

Not a jab at Jason..... he's a pal....

Sam's post came in before Jason's entry was even posted, so no jab.

Having grown up with both Sam and (my brother) Jason, I'll say that they both found it is really difficult to break even on creative pursuits that don't pander to least common denominator tastes.

This put a strain on their friendship back in the day, as the common expectation was that DIY projects could and should become alternative careers. This has happened for some who have tried, but not many.

They both put it all on the line for music and culture they had passion for... this will always unite them in my mind.

who said "looser" is a fuckin' rich bastard. not everybody have a rich family. life's not so wonderful sometimes.

but he said "looser" not "loser", so the comment really means nothing except that the poster is a fucking moron and Born Against ruled!

I never thought for a minute that I would ever really make money with my music. I don't envy people who do...at least they create jobs for lighting and sound people, and give ticket scalpers something to do besides selling crack and stealing hubcaps. Plus, what would that Taboo fellow from Black Eyed Peas do without that "band?" That poor thing would starve to death on his own. So let's "hear it" for mainstream music!
