Alone In A Crowd outtake shots

Lars from Uppercut/Alone In A Crowd sent us never-before-seen Alone In A Crowd shots along with some commentary. This is why I love doing Double Cross, enjoy. -Gordo DCXX

As far as I can remember, the pictures were taken by Erik Weiss (my little brother). They were taken outside my mom's house in Yonkers after band practice (we practiced in her basement). There's a pretty funny story involving Paul Bearer from Sheer Terror (another Yonkers native) and my mom's across the street neighbor whose house is in a couple of the group shots.

The location was by default, we needed a shot of the band for the 7" and since we hadn't played a show yet, there were no live shots. After band practice was the only time we knew that we'd all be together. As far as I can remember, we were getting ready for our first show and the 7" had already been recorded.

I think the girl in some of the shots was Jules' girlfriend at the time, but I don't remember her name. I believe she took the picture that is on the back cover of the first pressing. Also, Bill Wilson (Blackout Records) is in a couple of the shots.

We are kinda joking around in the photos because we were always joking around. Carl, Rob, and I have known each other since we were little and we still hang out today (and are just as retarded!). Both Jules and Howie were totally funny and joked around all the time. Though the music was serious, we as people were always having fun. That's one of the things I loved about all the bands I've been involved with (and my friends' bands as well): nobody took themselves too seriously. - Lars

I simply cannot believe I am wearing what appears to be a mock turtleneck AND a flight jacket. No accounting for 80's style.

BTW... Hey Lars- it would be fucking awesome if you got back on facebook.

Hmm. Odd.. I am 99.999% sure Justine DeMetrick told me once she took that photo on the back cover...

I hope the next contribution will involve the Paul Bearer vs. neighbor story.

@ Anonymous Yes, Beth was her name. Thanks! Totally felt bad that couldn't remember her name. Also, I'm pretty sure that Justine took the front cover picture of the buildings, but Beth took the band shot.

@Tony The Paul Bearer story...The cliff notes version. A few years after these pictures were taken, Paul was at a BBQ at my Mom's and randomly through conversation, I don't know how it came up, finds out my neighbor's name. Turns out that the guy that used to torment Paul in junior high. Paul (or "Punkrock Paulie," as I soon found out he was know as to my career-criminal neighbor) wanted to reintroduce himself to said neighbor, who had just come back home from being locked up. Paul puts down his burger and starts walking over to his house to see if he's home. Obviously, this was something that would not end well, would have ruined an otherwise perfect afternoon.. and probably would have required my Mom to move. Anyway, I still consider my talking Paul off my neighbor's front porch without incident one of the finest applications of social skills I have ever been a party to...

@Bill No time for Facebook. Feel bad enough hitting DCXX, B9, etc. when I should be studying...

Lars-

Paulie V. Al would have ended very very badly and you should consider a career at the UN for your efforts.

Alas by quitting the timesuck that is Facebook, you missed the magical re-appearance of the long lost Pat Trainor. Anyway- hit me up on email and hope school is going well.

Hey - I take the front cover photo on the Alone in the Crowd. it was of NYC, and I took in in 1980 from the window of a midtown Hotel. (I was 10,I was 18 when the record came out.) Brian Simmons put out the 7." He (I assume also Lars, he used to visit us in RI alot at the "Hardcore Hotel" house.) went through a stack of my photos and chose that. I had some of the negatives that were shot of the snowball fight. I didn't take them but did print some of them in my darkroom. possibly for the insert? I recall the negs being so High contrast that it was a pain to print. Brian or Jodi Vigneau (Ted Leo's wife,) was prob. in the darkroom with me.
