Chain Of Strength Live at the Safari Club 1990

Listened to both 7"s over and over and over again yesterday, so I guess I'm in a bit of a Chain mood. I also like to share.
Chain Of Strength at the Safari Club in Washington, D.C., March of 1990. What more needs to be said? -Tim DCXX

cheap plug... but photos from this show, as well as the other show Chain played in DC are in my photobook, Adult Crash... vcrecs.blogspot.com

Great video from LWB'ers Moe, and transferred by Mark Anthony.

Absolutely horrible. What a terrible band.

Concur. I get the sense that this band was bigger on the East Coast (and Europe?) than the West. They were kind of a joke out here.

I always liked their hair more than their music. Just sayin'

They were a joke on the west coast for sure. Hoffman was an alright dude, Frosty too. Ask Bratton about the time he ran hid and cancelled a show claiming he was ill. Oh he was ill alright, ill scared of Pete Koller from trying to bone Petes girlfriend. I think Bratton got slapped in the face with a pizza pie slice.

Ask him about it.

Just sayin' too

COS = total fags. They were laughed off the stage on the West Coast

Chain was the first band I thought that made straight edge hardcore seem lame.

That video quality about sums up COS as people too.

I lovvvvveeee Chain . Thanks D.C. for this awesome post. Guys who are haters just don't understand what good, pure, real, hardcore is.

The first band to make selling out popular. A true innovation. Thanks boys, glad your fat mugs are alllll up in Radio Silence. I couldn't be more proud. Finally getting the respect you deserve.

The first hardcore boy band... Or was that Bold? Both suck nuts.

Thanks for the post DC.

Wow, There's some serious hatred about Chain? Why? Great lyrics, Great music, Great look, Great Live, or at least what I've heard. I also don't understand why the Cali kids hate them so much. Weren't they like the quisisential straight edge Cali band? I always thought they were way, way, way better then bands of that same era like, NFAA, Insted or Uniform Choice. They definitley looked way cooler. I always loved that Curtis rocked Stussy gear too. That was so Cali to me.

JOSH ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME WITH THE PURE REAL HARDCORE COMMENT? BAD BRAINS, BLACK FLAG, MINOR THREAT, DEAD KENNEDY'S, THE MISFITS. THOSE BANDS ARE PURE REAL HARDCORE.

CHAIN OF STRENGTH IS A BUNCH OF RICH KID POSER FAGGOTS WHO MADE A BAND AROUND THE FASHION OF STRAIGHT EDGE RATHER THEN MAKING A BAND FOR THE SAKE OF MUSIC. THEY FUCKING BLOW! ANYBODY WHO LIKES THAT BAND IS A FUCKING MORON OR JUST DOESNT HAVE ANY TASTE IN REAL HARDCORE MUSIC.

WORST BAND EVER!

Never been a big fan, but you guys are being pretty harsh. Also the use of the word "faggot" is pretty weak

The guitar player drove the Porsche his daddy bought him to shows with the license plate that said X CLAIM. I'm not a hater on rich folks, but that is weak sauce.

They didn't exactly suck but they were super overrated. They were a Youth of Today mixed with that Cali Bro Uniform Choice feel knock off. The Stussy gear and Dep Hair Gel 909 softcore crew tried way too hard.

Justice League with Casey Jones singing was the best era these dudes had, the song Chain of Strenth on that Lp was amazing.

Yea, stop saying faggot you faggot.

You guys sure are some haters. I liked Chain Of Strength. I don't give a shit if anyone else did or not. Rich kids? Maybe, maybe not. So what? I never was interested in a bands family financial status. If they pissed off a lot of people just by existing, then they were doing something right.

I think the haters are just jealous. Chain accomplished more than you probably ever have in your life, Chain wrote better hardcore than you ever have (if you ever have), Chain will be long remembered and respected while you rot away into obscurity and on top of all that, they looked far better than you ever have while doing it. It's jealousy my friends, get over it.

Yeah please you fucking losers, step up to the plate and tell us what bands you played in? When did you get into hardcore? What the fuck have you even done? Some of those Chain guys were CENTRAL FIGURES in the California HC scene as far back as '84.

The first ten seconds of the first CHAIN EP alone is more powerful than a lifetime of your own accomplishments. Seriously, you come with it a little harder if you're gonna try to cut someone down.

Chain Of Strength... faggots? I think not. Those guys were baggin' more beaver than any hunter I've ever know. I agree with the last post, seems like a lot of jealous mother f'ers out there.

Got me thinking, why so much hate for COS when every band of that era turned out to fakes? People suck the dick of the Gorilla Biscuits, but hell, last I checked most of those guys turned out to be full of shit as well. Hell most of you shit talkers were probably frauds too... gung-ho SXE for a month, right?

I saw them at least four or five times, twice at the Anthrax, CB's, City Gardens and some place else in PA. Always thought they were a damn good live band, fun to watch and kids always went crazy out here for them. Thought both of those 7 inches were good to.

You guys are crazy. There has never been a more delicious hardcore band then COS. Those young bronzed men, with frosted tipped hair, and wearing mock Stussy turtlenecks use to make me cum in my shorts. I remember daydreaming in class all day of Curtis. He had that big bracey smile, and those doey eyes. I always imagined what it would be like for me to suck his cock. I would have let him cum in my mouth too, his boy juices dripping down my chin, as I screamed in pleasure. MMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMM.

Best Hardcore Band Ever!

This blog is starting to get really lame. 1/2 these comments, especially the last one are just really stupid. However Chain of Strength really did suck, as did Bold, those comments are pretty factual.

Really?

The insert shots of them playing in a practice space with 5 friends there? Classic.

Best Hardcore bands to come out of OC/LA from that era are:

1. NFAA/Carry Nation (got my tix for the reunion yesterday!)
2. Outspoken
3. A Chorus of Disapproval (same with these dudes)
4. Farside (that's right)

All these bands were innovators, originals, and often overlooked.

Post some vids from these bands some of us like real music, not fashion tools.

Everyone needs to chill. Chain was an excellent HxCx band, no matter their look, their motivation, or the size of their parents bank accounts. I missed seeing them live by about a year so I wasn't "there" but I can appreciate the records for what they are. I still hope they do a reunion!

Dollars to donuts I was in that crowd somewhere as I went to almost every HC show at the Safari Club from 89-93. Good memories...mediocre band. Great site by the way!

I just want to say after Chain turned lame, there was a burned and melted copy of their 7" hanging on the wall behind the counter at Zed Records. It hung there until Zed's closed I believe.
Oh and I'm not just bagging on them, many other bands turned lame too. But for some reason they had enough of a bad rep (in SoCal at least) to have that honor, and no other band did.

I was at that COS show and I went to almost every show at the Safari Club from 89-93. Good times in DC. I want to see more videos from the safari club. I know, there has to be a video of Swiz & Absolution show. Anyways, COS hate them or love them. I think the shows they did in DC, for that time, the kids ate it up.

Oh and another thing. The way the story went around SoCal, it was Alex that tooled Koller's chick, not Bratton. I don't know for fact, that was just the rumor.

is this a mouthpiece show?

I would love to see a photo of that!
